In 2010, BKW
launched a new short-term employment opportunity for recent law school
graduates whom we call “law clerks,” because the program is loosely designed
like some judicial clerkships. Specifically, up to five BKW law clerks
start on September 1st and stay with the firm for one year; there is no
expectation of permanent employment. The law clerks will receive intense
training in all areas of family law while working primarily with one of
BKW’s six permanent attorneys (the law clerk’s “mentor”), as well as taking
on special assignments for any of the other attorneys as necessary. The
law clerks will be encouraged to participate in bar association activities,
inns of court, law school alumni events and other networking opportunities.
They will also be asked to complete training courses offered by local legal
service agencies and take pro bono cases administered by the sponsoring
agency.
Clerks will be expected to
track their time and meet moderate billing targets, but the emphasis of
the program is to provide an opportunity to learn the practical aspects
of being a family law attorney in preparation for their first permanent
positions. The law clerks will receive modest compensation, health insurance,
personal time off and firm holidays. The firm will also cover each clerk’s
professional liability insurance while at BKW and certain other fees and
dues.
